“You’re absolutely sure?” Alesander stared out the window, brow knit together with a frown. After recounting her fight with Killian to Henry, he had insisted on the Golden Hand getting involved. For once, Hanna could not argue.

“You never forget that feeling,” Hanna replied, rubbing her chest, half expecting it to begin aching again.

“But without a blood oath? Or any other magic to seal the order?” There was a note of disbelief in his voice that lingered on offensive, as if he wanted to call her a liar. “I’ve never heard of anyone having the ability to just...do soul magic. Do you think it’s because he’s a Prodigy?”

“No. Emilia has never done anything like that.” Hanna shook her head, scrubbing her hands down her cheeks. “I suppose it won’t do us any good to wonder about it now. He’s gone. The Queen’s Guard hasn’t been able to track him down, and there’s really no way of knowing where he went.”

“Back to The Piper, I suspect.” Alesander snorted, arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the window sill. “I’ll keep my men looking. But, for now, you need to relax.”

Relax. It was Hanna’s turn to scoff. “I’ll relax when he’s in a dungeon and The Piper is dead.”

Alesander flashed a sympathetic smile. “At the very least, he’s lost his informant. Maybe you’ll have an easier time catching him, now.”

“Yeah. Maybe.” Hanna sighed, flexing her fingers as if that small act could clear away the residual pain of her loss. Alesander crossed the room and settled a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“It’ll all work out, Hanna.” He offered one last smile, a light squeeze of his fingers, and left to find Henry.

With every ounce of strength she had left, she stumbled to her bedroom, though sleep refused to come. Every time she closed her eyes, the heat of her fire and the phantom stab of Killian’s magic burned through her.

It was inching toward midnight when the letter came, slipping into existence on her bedroom floor. Though he hadn’t written his name on the envelope, she recognized the slant of Killian’s even script immediately. She considered leaving it unopened, or tossing it into the fire, but the elegant black seal taunted her.

Hanna doubted he would be writing to tell her where he had gone, and she certainly didn’t expect an apology. More likely, it was the explanation she had denied him. Though she had no inclination to read it, she found herself slipping a finger beneath the wax and tearing the letter open.
